Originally a manufacturer of cotton threads, Madeira developed and launched viscose/rayon thread in the late 1950s. Madeira was the first company to successfully launch high-quality embroidery thread made from 100% pure viscose for the commercial embroidery industry.
This innovative thread named "Madeira No.40" became known worldwide. Eventually, the company name was changed to “Madeira”, which is derived from the Portuguese Island Madeira that is known for its famous embroideries.
Madeira is a 100 year old thread brand based in Germany and sought after around the world. Madeira is distributed to sewing and quilting shops in the United States by Tacony Corporation.
