Thread Weight Basics

Thread Weight Basics

Madeira thread comes in many types, sizes, colors and weights. So, what does the weight of the thread actually mean? Let’s break it down to a few simple things to remember.

  1. The higher the thread number the finer the thread strand. The lower the thread number the heavier the thread strand.
  2. If your thread spool has a fraction, the top number tells you the weight and the bottom number tells you how many strands are twisted together.
  3. For general sewing and quilt piecing, Madeira Aerofil 40 weight or Cotona 50 weight are perfect choices for these types of projects.
  4. For serging, Madeira Aeroflock 100 weight or Madeira Aerolock 125 weight are great as you use multiple threads to form your overlock stitches increasing the strength of the stitch without the bulk.
  5. For embroidery, use Madeira Polyneon or Madeira Rayon which are both 40 weight and will ensure your stitches are dense enough to fill your embroidery designs.
